Obama: “You can’t change Washington from the inside”

Obama: “You can’t change Washington from the inside”

At a forum hosted by Spanish language TV network Univision in Coral Gables, Florida on Thursday, Barack Obama dropped one of the biggest gaffe bombs of the political campaign to date, telling the audience: “I’ve learned some lessons. Most important is that you can’t change Washington from the inside, only from the outside. That’s how some of our biggest accomplishments like health care got done – mobilizing the American people.”

What utter rubbish. What an insult to the intelligence of the American people. ObamaCare was the consummate Washington insider deal, complete with back-room deals, lobbyists, special exemptions for favored constituencies, and even unwritten passages to be penciled in later. The American people absolutely loathe ObamaCare – it was rammed down their throats with procedural tricks, over their strenuous objections. And we just learned, from the Congressional Budget Office, that ObamaCare is still decomposing – its huge middle-class tax hikes are going to hit 6 million people now, a 50 percent jump over the 2010 estimate.

Romney got roasted by the media for laying out a political strategy that was supposedly off-putting to 47 percent of Americans. Barack Obama just insulted the living hell out of the 60-plus percent who hate ObamaCare.

How is Washington supposed to become easier to change from the “outside” when it controls the health care of its citizens? As it stands, every demand for greater liberty by the American people is met with sneers that they’re selfish and greedy, more interested in lining their own pockets than putting cops on the beat, teachers in the classroom, and high-speed rail between irrelevant destinations. Just wait until they’re told that every effort to reduce the power of Washington will result in their sickness and death.

The 2010 Republican wave was largely a result of popular backlash to this and other excesses of Obama’s Washington-insider ways. Obama and other Democrats strove to explain it by saying voters were foolish and blinded by fear, which meant they were clearly in need of strong centralized leadership. “People out there are still hurting very badly, and they are still scared. And so part of the reason that our politics seems so tough right now, and facts and science and argument does not seem to be winning the day all the time, is because we’re hard-wired not to always think clearly when we’re scared,” as the President himself explained.

Obama’s entire governing philosophy is premised on the superior compassion and wisdom of Washington control. The American people want private sector job creation. They want to keep their own money. They want to start their own businesses. They want affordable gasoline. But they can’t have any of those things, because Obama’s central planning says they must be “transformed” instead.

Obama’s endless whining and excuse-making are like fingernails on a blackboard. You can’t “change Washington from the inside” even when your party controls both houses of Congress and the White House for two years, huh?

From “Hope and Change” to “this is as good as it gets, and you can’t change Washington from the inside?” We’ve got media sycophants basically treating Obama like a toddler, digging bizarre new depths of lowered expectations so they can make it look like he’s not a complete disaster. Rush Limbaugh made great sport today of an Associated Press effort to chew over two-year-old Census data to concoct an “economy has bottomed out” storyline for the media to get excited over. Four years ago, Obama would halt the rise of the oceans, dispense prosperity from his wise and steady hands, and “create or save” millions of jobs. Now it’s supposed to be exciting news that a few thirty-somethings might be thinking about moving out of Mom’s basement.

If we are to take Obama seriously, he’s just delivered one of the strongest arguments for bouncing he and his Party out of Washington wholesale… because if you can’t change Washington from the inside, we desperately need to stop it from growing, before there’s no “outside” left.

Update: Mitt Romney pounces, as well he should: “Now the country faces major challenges, you know that we face massive debt, trillion-dollar deficits. We face a Washington that’s broken – that can’t get the job done. The President today threw in the white flag of surrender again. He said he can’t change Washington from inside. He can only change it from outside. Well, we’re going to give him that chance in November. He’s going outside. I can change Washington. I will change Washington. We’ll get the job done from the inside – Republicans and Democrats will come together. He can’t do it. His slogan was ‘Yes, we can.’ His slogan now is ‘No, I can’t.’ This is time for a new president.”

I sense a round of campaign ads incoming.
