Dead-dad shame” on the campaign trail

“Dead-dad shame” on the campaign trail

To the consternation of some observers, CBS News decided to edit a passage out of Sunday’s 60 Minutes interview with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, in which Ryan explained that his proposed Medicare reforms do not affect existing recipients. “My mom is a Medicare senior in Florida,” Ryan said. “Our point is we need to preserve their benefits, because government made promises to them that they’ve organized their retirements around. In order to make sure we can do that, you must reform it for those of us who are younger. And we think these reforms are good reforms that have bipartisan origins. They started from the Clinton commission in the late Nineties.”

Some critics allege CBS cut this passage because it undermines the “Medi-Scare” campaign against Ryan, who has been portrayed literally flinging old people off a cliff by Democrats during previous campaigns. It’s not politically helpful to Democrats for voters to get an impression of Ryan as a dutiful son who respects and cares for the elderly.

It’s not the first time the Republican candidates’ parents have been mentioned in the campaign. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s vile effort to slander Mitt Romney, using imaginary “sources” which alleged Romney was a felon who hasn’t paid taxes in ten years, included the comment that Romney’s late father “must be so embarrassed about his son.”

This prompted comedian Jon Stewart to label Reid “terrible.” “I cannot believe you just went dead-dad shame on Mitt Romney,” Stewart exclaimed.

Oh, but there’s plenty more where that came from, Jon! On Monday, full-time national embarrassment Joe Biden dragged out Paul Ryan’s father during a campaign appearance in North Carolina. “My dad used to have another saying: ‘for real,’” said Biden. “And, by the way, I’ve been saying this for 30 years. And I’m glad to see that Congressman Ryan likes his dad, too, and quotes his dad. I mean that sincerely. But my dad had a lot of wisdom. Every time someone tell you, say, ‘Look, let me tell you what’s important to me, what I value.’ My dad would go, ‘No, no. Don’t tell me what you value. Show me your budget, and I will tell you what you value.’”

As the Weekly Standard notes, “Ryan’s father died when the congressman was 15 years old.” Furthermore, Biden’s party has failed to pass a budget of any kind for almost four years, and Barack Obama’s laughable “budget proposals” have never attracted a single vote – not even from members of his own party. Under the Vice President’s reasoning, that means the Democrat Party “values” absolutely nothing. Even by Biden’s standards, this was an incredibly foolish comment for him to make.

From the high command of Obama’s ugly gutter campaign, former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was not above using his own father to score some cheap-shot points. “You’re going to hand out vouchers to seniors,” Gibbs said of Ryan’s Medicare reform proposals. “You’re going to hand one to my father who is 83, who is a lung cancer survivor and has far different medical needs than his former White House staffing son does at 41.”

Well, then, it’s a good thing Barack Obama imposed an unsustainable one-size-fits-all program, supervised by a dozen unelected rationing bureaucrats, on the entire country, isn’t it? Sometimes Obama supporters, including his high-level campaign operatives, display a shocking lack of awareness about what ObamaCare actually is. They just pretend it means free health care and lollipops for everyone, and attack its critics in the most ridiculous terms. In reality, nothing is more dangerously unresponsive to the different medical needs of seniors than the top-heavy, mandate-crazed bureaucratic nightmare of ObamaCare, whose executors are already fiddling with ominous quality-of-life formulas.

When it was pointed out to Gibbs that Ryan’s plan explicitly states existing Medicare beneficiaries would see no changes whatsoever to their benefits, Gibbs accused Ryan of lying. “I wouldn’t trust Republicans on Medicare as far as I could throw them,” the Obama flack growled.

But you can trust the death panels to have your best interests at heart, folks! In fact, you have to trust them. It’s required by law.

Far from repudiating the disgusting “Romney killed my wife” ad run by the Priorities USA Super PAC, Obama’s campaign is still trying to coordinate their efforts to maximize the smear. Expect to hear a lot more from this failed President and his mouthpieces about how his opponents want to kill your elderly parents.
