The Left-wing Attitude Toward the Military

The Left-wing Attitude Toward the Military

College professor Colman McCarthy had an op-ed in the Washington Post over the last week decrying Ivy League schools accepting ROTC and military recruitment on campus in the wake of the overturn of Don't Ask Don't Tell. In it, he reveals his feelings on our military and the brave Americans who sign up to serve.

To oppose ROTC, as I have since my college days in the 1960s, when my school enticed too many of my classmates into joining, is not to be anti-soldier. I admire those who join armies, whether America's or the Taliban's: for their discipline, for their loyalty to their buddies and to their principles, for their sacrifices to be away from home. In recent years, I've had several Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans in my college classes. If only the peace movement were as populated by people of such resolve and daring.

So there you have it: the elitist liberal college professors equate the discipline and loyalty of America's troops only as they do the same of the Taliban. Disgusting.

Comment: Indeed, so according to his omniscience, Colman McCarthy's views are stand alone. His views are not reflected in a broader based narrative of the Left and among any liberals. Well them, Sky Pete, let's look merely at te TOP 25 schools according to U.S. News and World Report and determine if this Colman McCarthy's "lone views" are not resonating in further reaches:

Harvard University----No ROTC programs and no credit

Yale University---------No ROTC programs and co credit

California Institute of Technology-----No ROTC programs and no credit

Stanford University---No ROTC programs (banned over 40 years ago)

Columbia University---No ROTC programs (banned in 1969)

Univ. Of Pennsylvania---Only program on campus is NAVY, some credit offered. This is only recent addition as ROTC was banned in 1969

University of Chicago---ROTC banned from this institution. One former teacher, Martin Levit (not Colman McCarthy), worked to get ROTC programs out of all high schools, stating that they trained impressionable teenagers in “unthinking conformity and militarism.”

Dartmouth College---NO ROTC programs since Vietnam War. In 1980's a very limited Army program was introduced---with no credit attached. A teacher travelled from Norwich University to teach classes----no on-staff Dartmouth teachers used.

Brown University---NO ROTC programs---no credit. No transportation is offered to the nearest ROTC-friendly institution, Providence College.

Washington University, St. Louis---NO ROTC programs other than Army---with no credit offered for this.

Emory University---No ROTC programs on campus, transportation to nearby schools is denied to ROTC students.

Georgetown University---Only recently did they begin an Army ROTC program. Otherwise, since 1970 they were all banned. Only partial credit is offered.

Most of these universities have never seen Colman McCarthy teach within their halls. Therefore, to make the hallow claim that Colman McCarthy's views are "isolated" is unfounded...
